Pyramids, writing, farming—even civilization itself. Beer has been credited with saving, or at least improving, the world in hundreds of ways. Some historians believe the whole reason we let go of our hunter-gatherer ways and began farming was to have steady access to the grains used for brewing.
Beer has contributed to the understanding of germ theory, was served extra-strong to help alleviate labor pains, and fueled creativity by adding its intoxicating effects to fireside chats. Bishops urged people to drink beer instead of water—helping to combat water-borne diseases—and the intoxicating beverage became a focal point of traditional feasts.
Beer lovers and brewers have helped shape the world, and are still making changes both on the small scale and large. In honor of all the good that beer can do, here are a few of the ways Mendocino Brewing uses beer to help better the world.
Guitars 4 Troops was founded to provide guitars and other musical instruments to deployed troops stationed abroad. At writing, they were not accepting any more requests from soldiers for instruments, as they already have more than 800 names on the waiting list. Having a way to make some music and relax while stationed far from home is important to morale, and sending an instrument is such an easy and effective way to help troops deal with the stresses and loneliness of military life. Each year, Mendocino Brewing donates kegs to the annual Guitars 4 Troops fundraiser present by the Ukiah Rotary.
The Event of the Heart annual fundraiser is held to offer support and celebrate the lives of people affected by HIV/AIDS and hepatitis. This fundraiser is responsible for a large amount of the Mendocino County Aids and Hepatitis Network’s operating budget. Every year, Mendocino Brewing donates cases for the raffle benefit.
Mendocino County Museum
A bit closer to home, the Mendocino County Museum is dedicated to preserving the history of Mendocino County and its people. The museum also hosts an array of eclectic events, including a Mini Maker Faire, the Mushroom, Wine & Beer train, and the Kinetic Carnivale—a celebration of the steampunk and creative vibe. As a supporter of local history as well as interesting oddities, Mendocino Brewing contributes to various events held by the museum and is a sponsor of the Kinetic Canivale.
Sundays in The Park is a free concert series that features both local and world-renowned performers. Held in Ukiah every summer since 1991, the concert series is made possible by donations from local businesses. Mendocino Brewing is a major underwriter of this event, and also donates kegs to support the Main Street Program, which helps promote Ukiah’s cultural and economic role.
